Description

A distinctive pendant from the A. Leondarakis collection with a unique design.

The pendant is a copy of a B.C. 400, four drachma, silver coin from the ancient Greek city of Ephesus. On the front it features a bee and on the reverse a stag and a palm tree.

Ephesus was an important center of worship of the Greek goddess Artemis, and the images on Ephesian coinage represent her. Originally the bee was the symbol of an early Anatolian goddess who the Greeks later identified with Artemis. The two Greek letters, epsilon and phi, on either side of the bee are an abbreviation for Ephesus.

On the back, the palm tree alludes to Artemis’ birthplace, the island of Delos, where, under a palm tree, the goddess Leto gave birth to Artemis and her twin brother, Apollo. The forepart of a stag symbolizes Artemis’ affinity with animals, and may also refer to the stag figures that flanked her cult statue in the temple at Ephesus. (http://www.getty.edu)

The pendant is made from solid 925 sterling silver and is discreetly stamped with the metal fineness stamp and the workshop code ΩΙ34.

It will be sent to you with a natural leather string in a presentation box for you to keep or present as a gift.
